I recently started taking a class with Tom Lucas at the Lillstreet Art Center near my home. The class is called Printing on Clay, and it's pretty rad. The first technique Tom is teaching us involves using Xerox copies to make lithograph style transfers onto clay. We use a gum arabic, an oil based ink and the properties of oil and water to get these results. Yeah?

One of my favorite places to make photographs is Foster Ave Beach on the north side of Chicago. My sister and I headed up there to enjoy a unseasonably warm November day (it was almost 70 degrees) and to celebrate her birthday. For some time I've been photographing my sisters and asking them to photograph me in the same spot they were standing. I've tentatively called this series Each Other's Portrait.

I was digging through my external hard drive, searching for a few images I had taken atop the Tower Building in Elgin. There's a great view up there, if you can find a way up to the roof. It's the tallest building in the city, (and third tallest in Kane County) and gives you a great perspective of downtown E-town. I remember I was photographing around the bus terminal, which was one of my favorite places to find subjects at the time. I happened across a few people on the street who seemed very interested in what I was doing. One young man asked if I'd like to get on top of the Tower Building for a few shots. I thought he was joking. Apparently, he was doing some construction work on the building and had keys to every door in the place. And lo... I was on my way. Up we went, to the open air roof. It was perfect, just enough time to get a few frames before the sun went down. It's funny living in a city for so long and getting a chance to see to from a bird's eye view, pretty cool. Fabulous even, except for the bugs. They were swarming everywhere.

I was reminded of Greg Stimac's work at the Andrew Rafacz Gallery, a friend was just telling me about earlier this week. While on a road trip, he photographed dead bugs he collected on a sheet of plexi he attached to his windshield. He used a cigarette lighter to power a scanner and would record the tangible remains of his travels. Read more about it here.

There's a special photo moment coming up this year... The Impossible Project is producing new instant film materials in 2010. Black and white film will be available in the early part of the year, and color film will follow in the summer. Spectra film will also be back. Pretty cool.

In support and celebration, The Impossible Project teamed up with Blur Magazine and announced the Best Polaroid Photo contest!

"There is a certain secret relation between photographer and his/her instant analogue camera, a strong emotional and sentimental devotion. Therefore, we don’t want to limit you with any theme. Hello everyone. If you're reading this, you must be awesome. Thanks for bein' here.

So 2010 has begun and life is good. Things are going really well on all fronts. I can only hope that the whole year continues at such a fabulous pace. I've got lots to report so brace yourself...

I'm excited to announce one of my pieces will be in the Third Annual Juried Plastic Camera Show in San Fransisco next month at the Rayko Photo Center. If the mood hits and you're in the northern California area February through April, check it out. I snapped this image on my Holga early last year, and it has since become one of my personal favorites.

Should We Worry? Chicago, 2009

The last few weeks have been full of shooting. Earlier this month I was brought on set of Chicago rapper Napalm's latest music video. I know my mother reads this blog so I will spare you some of the details on this one, but... it was quite fun recreating a house party. Watching Crankstrap Productions make this all happen was pretty cool too. Hi mom!

I just returned from a weekend trip to the San Diego area. My dear friend Liz Cockrum (now Liz Lantz) just got married. Congrats to her and her new husband! I was honored to be one of the bridesmaids in such a beautiful ceremony. The whole weekend was full of so much love and beauty, it was amazing. Pass me a tissue! I have always found the paintings of Marc Chagall very inspiring. Whenever I walk through the Art Institute of Chicago I make it a point to check out a few Chagalls and the Ivan Albrights if they are out on display. I recently read that when Chagall first started painting, it was recommend that he use just one or two colors at first and progress from there. I picked up a brush today and busted out a few tubes of acrylic paint.... just wanted to try to get my brain thinking a little differently. I really wanted to reconsider light and all its beautiful subtleties. I'm pretty happy with my first attempt, although there is definitely a large window for improvement. I can remember the first time I went trick -or-treating. My mother and father rented a unit in a two-flat in Schaumburg, and my sister Kathryn and I dressed up as Strawberry Shortcake characters, while my youngest sister Barbara, was Smerfette. That's yours truly second from left, figuring out the finer points of my Apple Dumpling mask, with my blue poof ball hat. Our costumes consisted of the plastic mask, which held to your face with an elastic band and a brightly printed plastic sheet that covered your body. This allowed for many layers of clothing underneath, as Halloween is usually cold and rainy.

A very talented musician friend, Nathan Xander, was featured in this Friday's Chicago Tribune/Redeye. He had a big show coming up at the Empty Bottle the next night, so seeing this was very exciting. Printed along with the article was a Polaroid I took of Nathan in my old apartment.

It was super cool to see such great press for my friend, and to have my image printed in the Trib! Hey thats my living room chair!
